In this workshop, I would like to introduce the concept of drawing by lottery. As the name suggests, drawing by lottery involves gathering a group of people to write down words, which are then placed into a draw. The random selection of these worded slips forms the theme of the drawing activity.

The idea of determining the drawing theme by lottery is inspired by the methods used by Dadaists in their poetry creation. Dadaists often gathered to cut up newspapers and dictionaries, rearranging the pieces to form poems. This method, originally used for Dada poetry, has been transformed into a game for painters to explore different painting styles. The rules of the game are simple: we gather a group of artists, and each artist writes down an adjective and a noun. These two categories of words are placed in separate containers. We then randomly draw one adjective and one noun, which together become our drawing theme. The chosen theme will be unfamiliar to all participants, pushing the artists out of their comfort zones. They will then collaborate to complete the painting within a set time.

By confronting an unknown theme that is new to everyone involved, we are compelled to explore uncharted aspects of our own artistic practice. Additionally, since this is a collaborative creation, the diverse styles of the participants will blend together on the canvas. This is when artists can see other possibilities within their own styles, enriching their artistic experience.
